When I was first introduced to the Japanese anime, a few years back, I was so enthralled. The Japanese are really amazing in telling stories and showing stories. The culture, the belief, religion and the craft are combined to make the film not only believable but worth the time. It is not the usual anime films where children get to laugh and enjoy and forget about the story when they get home. Japanese anime not only entertains but also informs. It tells you what is spirituality and how we should take care of our environment as it is god-given, or "godly" in a sense.
Princess Mononoke is one of those recommended anime films. It does not only show the clash between the traditional and the modern, fate and the choice, the natural and the artificial. I also like the opposition between the two major female characters, the two wild pricesses: Princess Mononoke who is young and wild and lives with the wolves; and Lady Eboshi who's probably twice as old as Princess Mononoke, and who trains other women how to make and use of weapon and defies the gods and divinity(her wild side). The former acts instinctually while the latter seems to think more rationally and with wisdom. Both of them work toward their fate. Between them is Prince Ashitaka who's epic-saga is intertwined with the clashing of these female binaries.
