Canadian politics is getting heated.
|
It's not very often that there can be a blog title like this one. Canadian politics = exciting? What? Where am I? But for once - we've got something going on. I think what is happening now in Ottawa might actually be more exciting than what is happening right now in American politics. What is happening right now in American politics is Obama naming Hilary Clinton his Secretary of State which isn't exciting because everybody already knew it was happening two weeks ago.
Whereas no one in Canada saw this one coming. Bam! The Liberals, NDP and Bloc have all been secretly scheming against our latest Harper government since they all 'lost' to him during an election featuring one of the worst voter turnouts of all time.
If Harper's government tries to pass a budget that includes no stimulus package for the Canadian economy and cuts public funding for political parties they are going to pounce! If Harper's government presents a revised budget they will probably pounce anyways! Bringing down the government in a no-confidence vote and then asking to create a government made up of a coalition of Liberal, NDP and the Bloc when they feel like it.
This is pretty exciting for people who like watching Harper's sneaky plans to establish a Conservative monopoly within Canadian politics blow up in his face.
I like the coalition idea because it's a risk, it's new, it's sticking it to Harper, and it feels more like real politics than anything I've seen in Canada in a long time.
I don't like the coalition idea because it will make Stephane Dion Prime Minister, it will give the Bloc a lot of power to decide which coalition legislation goes through and which doesn't, and it will be unstable in a period where stability would be good.
So it's more like choosing the lesser evil. The stability of knowing you have a sneaky grinch as your Prime Minister. Or the potential of having five bickering 'Prime Ministers' (Dion, Ignatieff, Rae, Layton and Duceppe) and then a swift return to the grinch.

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits."
About this category: Learning & Education
|
It is a wonderful thing to know that words are exactly what they are---words; which come out and then evaporate and go with the breeze. Spoken word, that is, will come out and then fade away. Written words can equally be erased or discarded. People hearing or reading words can use words anyway they choose to, take them to heart and react accordingly, or hear them and no matter how bad they are, make a decision even though difficult, to have total control over their reaction to those words.
Painful words, especially when laced with lies can cut as sharp as a knife and inflict such pain. Painful words have driven people to end their lives, to take another person's live or just to go through life feeling less than what God designed them to be. Painful words can kill a human spirit.
Painful words spoken in a competitive setting as in a debate or campaign are best put aside with a handshake at the end of the exercise and left right there.
Rising up above hurtful words and lies which are meant to cut down is a difficult task which if, and when mastered, is an art that brings great joy and peace. The task starts with learning to know and love who one is. Armed with the knowledge that people are made in the image of God and the knowledge that God is not in the business of making garbage or useless creations, it becomes easier to start learning how to take those fiery arrows of hurtful words, lies and half truths in stride. It may be weighing the heart down, with tears stinging the eyes, but as soon as one remembers that whoever is saying or writing these words is not even in control of the air that goes in and out of them to make those words possible, the impact of the arrows start fading away instantly. It starts making it clear that those words may actually be the outlet for inner turmoil and pressure for the speaker or writer. Looking at it that way puts the hearer in a position to switch from being a victim to being a person who extends pity and compassion to the speaker. Blessed are the merciful---- for they shall obtain mercy and the mercy works wonders, wiping off the pain and replacing it with fulfillment and joy and appreciation of God's gifts many of which are taken for granted.
A person who just received the bad news that they may not live to the end of the year will not mind hearing a few bad painful words if that will change their bleak situation. Putting words in their right place, in the air, helps blow them away and if written words, read and erase off the mind and dwell on blessings all around, counting them; good health, sight, hearing, the ability to walk, children, family, to mention a few. In other words, blessings wipe away the impact of hateful words.
Words are powerful. Words can do so many different things. They can edify. They can diminish. Words can unite. They can disperse. Bad, hurtful words have the tendency to destroy but we as humans with the ability to CHOOSE can choose the way we react to words, which includes rising above bad words, trying to put into consideration the speaker of the words and what drives a person to speak or write hurtful words. The focus becomes the source of the words. The best thing becomes to make the choice to let the speaker of the hurtful words off the hook completely. That gets rid of garbage and baggage which can weigh down a person in an unbelievable manner. Such garbage can hold down a person, preventing progress, preventing happiness, stealing peace and fulfillment.
The best thing to do then becomes to choose to let words be just what they are---Words. In one way, out the other.
This Thanksgiving, I am very thankful for the ability to let words be just words and nothing more. God's word never changes and that makes all the difference in the world. Man's words on the other hand, as powerful as they may be are not carved in stone, will not necessarily have real power, unless we let them.

Foxknot
|
Foxknot by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law (2002) watercolor 16 x 18
Movement, strength, mystery, nature, earth and a little whimsy too. Could this be an Animal Ally knot with Fox-faeries? As such the knot would impart wisdom of fox with a fae influence. The circular knot is a symbol of interconnection, unity and eternity. Fox imparts the ability to watch the motivations and movements of others while remaining unobserved. Faery is otherworldly, magical and mysterious; not of this world, nor influenced by it. This knot would be a spiritual tool to help the person become a silent watcher who moves easily between worlds. I love this wonderful, whimsical interpretation of a Celtic Knot.
A deeper understanding of Celtic knots and Animal Allies:
The Celtic knot symbolizes the Thread of Life. To the Celts, the human soul was thought to be a fragment of the divine, which will ultimately return to its divine source. Through successive rebirths the soul rids itself of its accumulated, inherited impurities until it finally achieves the goal of perfection.
The interlaced, or latticed, knotwork patterns, with their unbroken lines, symbolize the process of humankind’s eternal spiritual evolution. When the cord is unravelled, it leads us on. A knot lattice can be used as an aid to concentration by occupying the conscious mind with a demanding repetitive task.
Our Animal Allies or helpers choose us to help us with our growth and understanding. A detailed description of Celtic Animal Allies.
Stephanie Pui-Mun Law is a 31 year old artist/programmer. She began painting otherworlds in early childhood. Graduated from a program of Computer Science in 1998. After working in programming for three years, She left the world logic for the world of fae; painting full time. You can read news, learn about watercolor painting, browse her galleries and purchase paintings at www.shadowscapes.com.

Rome: It’s beautiful and it’s not. Kinda like everything else in life.
“La prossima fermata è Roma Termini.”
I moved to Italy to live at the end of September last year. I lived in Brescia (a medium-sized city in Northern Italy) until March 1, when I moved to Siena.
(I am once again back in Brescia, but that’s a story I’m going to save for another day.)
I picked up some vocabulary during those first five months in Italy, but it wasn’t until I started attending an Italian class for immigrants in Siena that I really started learning the language.
Now, finally!, I understand much of what is being said either to me or around me. The language no longer sounds foreign or like pretty sounds flowing forth from people’s mouths. Although I’m more motivated to learn the language–because it finally seems like an achievable goal to converse fluently–the glossy veneer of the nonsensical musical sounds has dulled. I don’t know, there’s something about understanding when somebody complains about the weather (or conversely, the ease in which I can complain about it) that makes any language sound less romantic.
Shiny glossy veneers are so overrated. Don’t you think? I mean, a veneer is just a thin expensive sheet of wood (or metal) with layers upon layers of unusually toxic clear varnish. If it wasn’t for the common cheap material beneath (like pine or regular mild steel), the veneer would have nothing to attach itself to.
And I’ve always preferred the look of a dull, used or aged finish anyway…and now that I’ve exhausted my analogy I’m finished with this post.
But one more thing before I go to bed on this hot summer night: it is nice to know that you can simply listen to the conductor to know when your next stop is and not have the nervous wondering of whether you’ve missed it or have yet to arrive.
Arrivederci a dopo.

MY DREAM AND VISION
|
Natural Touch is a Non Governmental Organisation based in Calabar the Eastern part of Nigeria. The inspiration come from a point of observation of handicapped people and Children roaming the streets of some citites in Nigeria mostly in Calabar begging for alms.
Most of them at the end of the day retired to uncompleted buildings to pass the night,It was a very gory site when a reported case of ritual dehumanising killing of two of such people in a street close to my residence. These two were killed and some part of them remove for rituals activities or some other things not quite known to us.
So touched by such inhuman treament to people because of their inability to defend themselves or provide proper accomodation for themselves, and even a source of livelihood was traumatic, hence,my decision to get the NGO (NATURAL TOUCH) started, with the aim to provide food and shelter for the hanicapped.Make sure there is a future for them and security of life for them.
Upon our inception,we had limited our intention to mostly the young ones and average aged.Although we could not provide accomodation for them but we provide the basic needs which is food for them atleast once a day.
It is our aim to increase the feeding arrangement to twice a day and also build a home for them.It is our aim to accomodate at least 2000-5000 handicapped people of difiers ages in the home, and Animals too.
With support from other Organisations/Individauls that are touched just as we are.We will establish a school or a handicraft centre for them to study and become independent of their own in future.
Suffice to say here that most of them roam the street with torn cloths and look unkept,We also provide clothing where necessary and affordable to them.
Based on our inability to sustain the financial burden,we are looking forward to Groups or Individuals with similar passion as we have towards uplifting the living standard of these hadicapped and also thinking of ensuring their future.
We are planning of building a home for them in Calabar to accomodate the handicapped and also recruit personnels to take care of their cooking and tranining.
We look forward to support from passionate groups and individuals.
Thanks,
Dennis

Tupac's Vision in 'Changes' and America Today
About this category: Culture & Identity
|
Sometime last week I was reading a blog somewhere and saw a reference to Tupac's Changes and the America of today (I don't want to claim the idea of the link).
He'd started with "I see no changes wake up in the morning and I ask myself is life worth living should I blast myself? I'm tired of bein' poor & even worse I'm black." All through the song, both it's lyrics and beatings with his voice would stress the burden of being black in his America. He continues with "Cops give a damn about a negro, pull the trigger kill a nigga he's a hero..." His dream as he continues, ("We gotta start makin' changes, learn to see me as a brother instead of 2 distant strangers and that's how it's supposed to be") is an America -and the world at large- where colour does not entail demacations. the discomfort was so heavy on his heart he felt a chang would be hard: "That's just the way it is. Things'll never be the same. That's just the way it is."
All his later life, it seems his vision is capped up when he recites in the song:
"We gotta make a change...
It's time for us as a people to start makin' some changes.
Let's change the way we eat, let's change the way we live
and let's change the way we treat each other.
You see the old way wasn't working so it's on us to do
what we gotta do, to survive."
Just like he noted; we all get what we bargain for no matter how long we think we got away: "And as long as I stay black I gotta stay strapped, & I never get to lay back, 'Cause I always got to worry 'bout the pay backs. Some punk that I roughed up way back, comin' back after all these years."
Barack Obama's message was that of 'Change.' Has Tupac's "Changes' suddenly become irrelevant, and is America going to get back all the roughing up meted out on blacks and other minorities way back? Surely we are up for Change with Obama.
This reminds me of a mail that made its round not long ago with a big picture of President -elect Obama nicely framed up and gracefully placed on a wall reading:
"Mr. President, Now Available in Black!"
I can't help but feel happy at the change. Even if Obama does nothing to impact on the race issue (and I don't frankly think there is somethign so great he can do about it like declaring a compensation for each balck family), it is a consolation that at least, Mr. President of America is now Availbale in Black!

Let it Go Round!
|
You Know what is wrong with all the sit-tight-here-cos-the-world-is-hot? They all have refused to make it go round. Yeah, it actually tries to go round but when it comes to them, they'd like it to sit and serve them instead of giving a hand and making it get round.
Well, all ya who are out there sitting on the fence, it ain't gon work for us no more. Let us get up and do something. We gotta help it go round.
Asking what is it? Well. Let's Share it: Love I mean.

The Prayer - Dion and Groban, live duet
|
‘The Prayer’ - live duet by Céline Dion and Josh Groban
HAPPY THANKSGIVING! A wondrous remembrance of thankfulness for this day and everyday.
An amazing, moving performance. Beautiful voices coming together in perfect harmony. Could feel Spirit moving through them both. Gave me chills and brought tears. Very touching!
